The purpose of these meanwhile uses is intended to bring early regeneration benefits to the area and to ensure that the area continues to thrive during the demolition and construction works.
A number of meanwhile uses have already been completed and there are more ongoing projects.
A temporary space at the eastern end of Wansey Street created by and for the community for gardening and local events. The Mobile Gardeners were so called to be able to move around the site in line with the development phasing. As such they will be on the move in the Autumn of 2014 to make way for the first phase of Elephant Park – South Gardens. The gardeners will move to a large area within the northern part of the Elephant Park site just to the south of Crossway church.

Artworks Elephant is a new arts and creative business community on our Elephant Park site, renting refurbished shipping containers to selected retailers, artisans and creative start-ups in order to creative a new innovative business community. The space also includes a new bar run by Longwave, a temporary library to provide a local service after the Walworth Town Hall fire, and a marketing suite and information centre for Elephant Park.

An art gallery, project and studio space, which was located in the former clubroom on Brandon Street until December 2013. This has since moved to a site at 18 Newington Causeway.

In 2013, the Elephant & Castle’s annual festival held a number of its events on the site of the former Heygate Estate.

In August 2012, a go-karting event was held using the walkways of the former Heygate Estate, and local people got the chance to build their own go-karts.
