Trafalgar Place celebrates reaching its full height

The rapid transformation of Elephant & Castle into one of the most desirable and sustainable places to live in Central London has taken another major step with the first new development in the £1.5bn regeneration reached its full physical height.

The completion of the final storey at Trafalgar Place, which is being built in the south-east corner of the former Heygate Estate, was marked by a ‘topping-out’ ceremony – a tradition in the building industry when the highest point of construction has been reached.

Local Councillors, Fiona Colley and Peter John, joined Southwark’s regeneration partner, Lend Lease, the integrated property and infrastructure group, for the event (pictured).

Pascal Mittermaier, Lend Lease’s Project Director for Elephant & Castle, said: “Building on the strong progress that has already been made over the last 12 months, the topping-out at Trafalgar Place is yet another step forward in the transformation of Elephant & Castle, which is fast-becoming one of the most desirable and sustainable places to live in the capital.”

“These homes will be the first to complete as part of the regeneration and it is encouraging to see such rapid progress being made. We look forward to welcoming residents to their new homes next year.”

Cllr Fiona Colley, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Each time I come to Elephant and Castle I’m struck by how fast our regeneration is progressing, whether it’s the new housing springing up, or the leisure centre taking shape. There is so much more to come, and this attractive and eco-friendly development at Trafalgar Place is a great example of what we want to bring to the whole of the Elephant: high quality housing for all that blends in with its surroundings, with plenty of green space.”

Jerome Geoghegan, Group Director for Development and Sales at L&Q, who are providing the affordable homes at Trafalgar Place, said: “Today marks a key milestone in the delivery of new homes in Southwark, as well as the wider regeneration of Elephant and Castle. Trafalgar Place continues L&Q’s long-standing commitment and investment in Southwark, where we currently have more than 4,000 homes either in management or under construction. We are delighted to be playing our part in the development of Trafalgar Place, and helping to bring high quality homes in central location, for people on a range of incomes.”

Trafalgar Place comprises 235 new homes ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments and is arranged over seven buildings ranging from four to ten storeys in height. For more information about Trafalgar Place, click here.
